Over 40 Years Experience
Ed Mayhew retired from the Postal Service on April 1, 2005, after 37 years on the job. During that time Ed has become one of the most recognized experts on Periodicals mail in the country. Ed was a part of the Rates and Classification Service Center (RCSC) since 1986, ending his career as a Classification Specialist in the New Pricing and Classification Service Center in New York City.

Ed has appeared as an expert witness in court during a fraud trial and has been a rebuttal witness for the Postal service at the Postal Regulatory Commission hearings on Classification Reform in 1995.  

He was a coordinator for the Classification Reform implementation team and has been the RCSC (now PCSC) coordinator for six postage rate case implementations. On those occasions, he has made presentations, videos, television and radio appearances.
Senator Ron Johnson on the Postal Service subcommittee wouldn't be averse to USPS filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Ed has conducted an average of 25 to 50 seminars on various subjects each year for the past 22 years at Postal customer Council meetings, Red Tag Association meetings, Periodicals Focus groups and National Postal Forums. He has been named top postal speaker eleven times at the National Postal Forums.  Ed was an instructor for the Periodicals training courses offered to customers and postal employees and has written and appeared in various videos and postal satellite network presentations.  

He has co-authored the new application form for Periodicals mail replacing five older forms, co-authored the DM-204 Handbook, the first handbook for filing applications for Periodicals mail and co-authored the Voter Registration and Vote-by-Mail Guide which is in use nationwide. He is the 2002 winner of the Angelo R. Venizian award for contributions to the publishing industry, the first postal winner of that award in its history.

He has represented the Postal Service on two occasions in London England in 1994 and 1998 and has written numerous rulings and instructions, and articles for postal publications over the years.

Ed has been named as a member of MTAC (Mailer’s Technical Advisory Committee) following his retirement and represents the Coalition of Religious Press Associations at Postal Headquarters in Washington DC and was part of the FAST workgroup regarding scheduling of Periodicals mailings and a Service Standards workgroup. Ed is a member of the Periodicals Advisory Group (PAG) and is current industry c0-chair for Periodicals for the Eastern Area Focus Group.  Ed is also was a past Vice President of Education for the New York City Postal Customer Council and is editor of the Red Tag Publications Association newsletter. Ed also publishes his own newsletter called “The Railway Post Office” available from this web site.

Ed has founded and is the president of his own consulting company called Eddie Mayhew’s Classification Station. His career has been based on simplifying the rules, getting the most for the customer’s dollar and most of all, upholding honesty and integrity in making decisions affecting the Postal Service and the publishing industry. He has worked with numerous customers ranging from a simple newspaper to major magazines and associations. He has obtained Periodicals status for a number of publications during this time.

As a member of MTAC, Ed shared, along with the other members, the 2008 Partnership for Progress award at the National Postal Forum in Anaheim California and shared in the Silver Award for Education given to the Greater New York PCC in 2007 and the Gold award for education in 2008 where the Greater New York PCC attained top national performance status.  In 2014 Ed was named as Periodicals Industry Co-Chair for the Eastern Area Focus Group.
